Biography

Prof. Dissanayake is a Medical Geneticist. His special interests are Genetics & Genomic Medicine; Biomedical informatics; and Bioethics. He is currently the President of the Commonwealth Medical Association (2016-2019); a steering Committee Member of the Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative (G2MC), a Steering Committee Member of the International Genetics Education Network; and a Board Member of the Forum for Ethical Review Committees in Asia and the Western Pacific (FERCAP)

  Awards

Oration  

  1. Nalin Rodrigo Oration 2015. The Nalin Rodrigo oration is one of the prestigious orations awarded by the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists on invitation to a leading clinician/researcher. The title of the oration delivered by me on 20 December 2015 was “Genetics of Cancer: Can we do more for our patients and their families?”
  2. K Rajasuriya Oration 2014. The K Rajasuriya oration is one of the prestigious orations awarded by the Ceylon College of Physicians on competitive basis. The title of the oration delivered by me on 7 October 2014 was “The role of single nucleotide variants in genetic predisposition, diagnosis, and therapy: A decade of work in the Sri Lankan population”.
  3. E. V. Peiris Oration 2013. The EV Peiris oration is one of the prestigious orations awarded by the Ceylon College of Physicians on competitive basis. The title of the oration delivered by me on 14 September 2013 was “Genetics of Thromboembolic Disease in Sri Lanka”.
  4. SLMA Oration 2008. The SLMA oration is the most prestigious oration awarded by the Sri Lanka Medical Association for medical research in Sri Lanka on competitive basis. The title of the oration delivered by me on 19 March 2008 was “Genetics of Pre-eclampsia and the Weight of Babies at Birth”.

International  Awards 

  1. Young Scientist Award. Awarded by the Asia Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. 2011. This award is awarded to the principal authors of the three best papers published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research in 2009 and 2010. The award was presented at the Opening Ceremony of the XXII Congress of AOFOG held in Taiwan, Taipei, Taiwan from 23-27 September 2011.
  2. Yuji Murata Endowment Award. Awarded by the Asia Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. 2013. This award was awarded to Gayani Harendra for her PhD work conducted under my supervision [Prof. Rohan W Jayasekara was the co-supervisor] and reported in the paper titled “Haplotypes of Heparin-binding EGF- like Growth Factor (HBEGF) gene are associated with preeclampsia” published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research [2012 Jan;38(1):239-46. doi: 10.1111/j.1447-0756.2011.01700.x]. This award is awarded to the principal author of the best paper in the field of fetal and maternal medicine published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research in 2011 and 2012. The award was presented at the Opening Ceremony of the XXIII Congress of AOFOG held in Bangkok, Thailand from 20-23 October 2013.

  8. The Outstanding Young Person (TOYP) 2008 for Medical Research. This award is made by the Junior Chamber International Sri Lanka to ten outstanding young Sri Lankans every year. In 2008 I was one of the recipients of this award. The award was presented on 12 September 2008.

  • University of Colombo Research Award 2008. This award was made by the University of Colombo in Recognition of Excellence in Research in the Year 2008 at the Postgraduate Convocation on 6 September 2009.
