Microbiology is a captivating science that is at the core of the exciting new developments in modern molecular biology. Microbiology features in degree courses offered from both the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Science.
The undergraduate curriculum caters to the needs of the diverse streams to impart knowledge and professional skills required for the practice of Medicine. The broad goal of the medical microbiology curriculum is to explore host-parasite relationships and immune mechanisms, microbial flora and its importance in health and disease, pathogenesis of common infections including opportunistic pathogens, tests for rapid lab diagnosis to support clinical diagnosis, choice of antimicrobial agents for treatment, methods of sterilisation and practice of biomedical waste disposal. Bringing about awareness of National Health Programmes for the prevention of communicable diseases is another goal of the department.
